Peer Tutoring 

PEER TUTORING SERVICES

PHILOSOPHY: The peer tutoring program is offered as a service to FVTC students and is one of several options which the student may consider if he/she is experiencing academic difficulties in a program course.  The FVTC peer tutoring program staff will make every effort to search for a peer tutor and provide an appropriate educational setting for the enhancement of the student's understanding of material in a given course.


MOST FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS


Q: Who is eligible for this service?

A: This service is offered to FVTC students who are currently enrolled in vocational or technical level courses, and who are experiencing some difficulty in mastering the material. The service is available to students who are not maintaining a "C" in the course for which a tutor is requested.


Q: If I'm not sure that I am eligible or I have a special need, what do I do?

A: Make an appointment to see Debra Wendt in Student Services so that your situation can be reviewed.


Q: Can I request a tutor anytime?

A: Requests must be submitted before midterm of the course.


Q: How long does it take to have a tutor assigned to me?

A: After the Tutor Request Form has been completed, we will then begin our tutor search. The amount of time can vary, but it may take five school days.


Q: Is there a fee for this service?

A: No, there is no fee. Your tutor will be paid out of federally-funded project activities for which FVTC has applied.


Q: What are the qualifications of the tutors?

A: A peer program means that students help other students. The peer tutor may be concurrently enrolled in the course or she/he may have previously completed the course. Tutors are required to obtain academic references and provide pertinent qualifications. Qualified tutors may not exist for some courses or for certain hours of the day. However, every effort will be made to provide a tutor.
