ELL Nursing Assistant Program

Unique opportunity for English Language Learners interested in becoming a Nursing Assistant.

The ELL Nursing Assistant program 30-543-300a is designed specifically for English Language Learners.  After completion of an ELL assessment, the next step is to enroll in English Healthcare Language for Nursing Assistants.  This 3 credit course is a prerequisite to the ELL Nursing Assistant program and focuses on health care vocabulary, pronunciation and understanding cultural differences in the healthcare field.

After successful completion of English Healthcare Language for Nursing Assistant class, the student is required to enroll in both the Nursing Assistant ELL version class and English Terminology for Nursing Assistants.  These two classes are co-taught in the same classroom/lab by Nursing Assistant and ELL faculty on the Appleton campus.  The clinical experience will be taught by the Nursing Assistant Faculty and scheduled in a local, long-term care agency.

The program includes content required for state and federal nursing assistant-home health aide guidelines and qualifies you to apply for the certification exam after successful completion of the course.  The student must attend all 120 hours of instruction to meet the requirements established by the Wisconsin Department of Health.

To enroll in the ELL Nursing Assistant Program student must complete the following 5 steps:

  1. Complete an English Language Assessment Test and meet language requirements.

  2. Successfully complete the English Healthcare Language for NA class.

  3. Complete an FVTC admission application for NA program.

  4. Enroll in the ELL Nursing Assistant program with the ELL Program Specialist.

  5. Register for both the ELL Nursing Assistant class and English Terminology for Nursing Assistant class.
